With construction beginning in 1255, the castle was built to house the highest Magistrate and is the oldest public building in Florence. In the 1500s it began its life as police headquarters, eventually
modifications were made to house prisoners in cells, and executions took place in this courtyard until 1786, when Italy abolished the death penalty. In 1859 it became the National Sculpture Museum.
Oceanus;
A bronze cannon used to protect the shores of Pisa. This piece and its carvings represent the highest achievement of 17th century bronze casting.
The big guy himself, Cosimo Medici I.
My fave: Michelangelo, commissioned by his nephew, just before his death.
I loved this massive Lion, with the sun crossing over him while we were there. Holding Florence's emblem contained in the shield.
And we were able to watch 2 restorers at work!
