Premiers, & Community Gardens

"Sunday is sports day!" Is working out well here in Italia. We use it as our freedom day, each to do what we prefer, and not drag the other one along.

This time, Marc finds out that the Florence Premier team is playing, the larger Regional Club team, Senior Men,  who get paid to play.  The logo, of course it's Medici!

The Italians look a tad messier! But he says it was top-notch rugby, same level or a bit better than SABRFC 1. Paid €8 to watch, had beers, bought a t-shirt.

Meanwhile, I hear about a fundraiser for the Florence Children's Hospital. The Four Seasons Hotel has a multi-acre formal garden that they open to the public once a year to support this cause. And across the street, a community garden that they also finance. 2 for 1 for me!  Santa choir, children's choir, a roller-blading Santa parade! Lots of kiosks, food, crafts, music, balloons, 1000s of attendees. I ate roasted chestnuts for the first time, felt very local walking around with my little bags of goodies.

A children's wishing tree, recycled sculptures throughout the gardens which have been created beside each traditional sculpture that is its model. Adds a playful and colourful hue!

The community garden is on grounds where Renaissance gardens once  stood, eventually abandoned and  claimed by a neighbouring elementary school 150 years ago, paved over for a track and again,  left to disintegrate over time. 2 years ago, a bunch of corporations pitched in to take over on behalf of a network of social services: at-risk youth,  children in recovery from addictions or hospital stays,  disable youth and seniors, and look what they've created together!

And flowers are still in bloom in December!
